Historical details regarding fine jewelry are often sketchy, but one thing is certain: We've been adorning ourselves with precious metal and jewels for more than 5,000 years.
From the Ancient to the Contemporary: The History of Fine Jewelry
The appreciation of beauty and the desire for adornment are intrinsic to our human nature, and the history of jewelry is a long one.
The History of Spiritual Jewelry
There's no question that jewelry inspired with themes of faith is popular today. You can see beautiful pieces in the mall, market, school and work. But it may surprise you that this fascinating and rich tradition was even more popular in centuries past.
The History of the Engagement Ring
The engagement ring that symbolizes the eternal love of two people who have pledged to join together in marriage actually dates back to the 15th century.
These Diamonds Have a Lore All Their Own
The world's most famous diamonds have led lives rich in history, drama and royal intrigue.
World's Largest Diamonds Steeped in Mystery, Intrigue
Because of their rarity and beauty, large diamonds have a mystical and romantic allure that make them the perfect stuff of legend ? both historical and fictional. Films from ?The Pink Panther? (which was a diamond, not an inspector) to ?Titanic? have used rare gems to drive story lines, but in the real world, the tales are no less fascinating.
Can you imagine working with a fragile gemstone, and taking a fine blade over the natural surface and hoping not to create an unwanted chip to the design? To use an emerald as your canvas? To carve it into a face, an animal, or even an initial? I certainly can’t. I have a hard enough time holding a cup of coffee. But artists and jewelry makers alike have studied and perfect this ancient method, and it just blows my mind!
An intaglio is a gemstone (or any stone for that matter) that has incredible meticulous carvings inlayed in the stone. It was a staple adornment in the pre-Art Nouveau era. It’s design consisted of either symbols, portraits, or someones initials. I have included a famous example of a fantastic intaglio (see below)!. A beyond antique carved amethyst portrait of Roman Emperor Caracalla; inscription in Greek letters and cross added at the Byzantine period in order to transform the portrait in that of St. Peter. Amethyst intaglio, ca. 212 AD. From the treasury of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris.
On occasion, I will find an intaglio through my numerous sources, but decide to keep them for myself because of the rarity of the item! If you are looking for an intaglio ring, pendant, or fob, please inquire through my website and I promise to do my very best to locate it for you!
Compass Rose Jewelry's line inspired by Victorian mourning jewelry, which has an interesting cultural and natural history. Mourning jewelry of the late Victorian era (1860s – 1880s) represents not only the love, loss and grief of Queen Victoria as a human being – but of the experiences of people across Europe and the Americas experiencing loss of loved ones on the teetering edge between the old world and the modern era. A time bridging an older world of European tradition and a new world of innovation and technology – the Victorian Era was steeped in layers of social convention, personal stories and political change.Queen Victoria, in her decades of reign, influenced politics, fashion and social convention of the country, and indeed much of the world.  Utterly devoted to her husband of more than two decades, Victoria was distraught after his death in 1861.  Victoria and Albert’s was a marriage based truly on deep respect and romantic love, though was firmly contextualized within the constraints of the time.  Though it took Victoria several years to share responsibilities of ruling with Albert as she was rather controlling and precise in her dedication to the responsibilities of the throne. However, Albert’s expert administrative abilities and grasp of global political shifts at work surpassed Victoria’s, though neither of them imagined the how much the world would change in their children’s generation.
