What a long history that jewelry has, the most amazing pieces that we encounter today at the boutiques have a long period of life, evolving through the thousands of ages to most of the finest jewelry that we see today. It is believed that the first jewelry was worn 40,000 years ago. The first materials that were used for the first jewels were simple natural materials such as nuts, seeds, stones, shells and even animal teeth and bones. The first jewelry were probably created for grooming or use as a talisman or charm. The first cave people wore animal bones, tusks and pendants made of shells. Jewels played a role in religious or social power by confirming the power of the person who wore them. Over the centuries, bones and shells were replaced by precious stones and metals mainly of gold and silver (which represented power and wealth).
The people who first were devoted on creating jewelry were the Egyptians (they were the  first that used gold as gold was in abundance in ancient Egypt), but also in Mesopotamia and ancient Greece. There is evidence of the Minoan civilization in which the jewelry was worn in social events in contrast to other nations where it was only a privilege of the higher classes.Over the centuries jewelry has acquired identification role and but also a role mainly in guilds, squads etc. It was also a symbol of commitment to marriage.
The jewelry is no longer generated only from expensive metals and stones.  It follows  fashion and according to the style and the time it is adjusting to it.
In modern times, many movements and fashions were born and alternated depending on the style of each era, such as Romance, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, etc. Some remain classics, such as vintage jewelry.
In our times there is a turn in the handmade and often more economical yet simple jewelry. The materials that are used may be simple everyday materials such as threads, laces, beads and slightly more specialized items such as liquid metal and glass. Also depending on fashion there are also knit jewelry  and the use rubber or other materials.
Jewelry up to now is from the main accessories of the female population and is being used as  a way of attraction of the opposite sex- although history has showed us that depending of the time periods jewelry may be a male accessory too.
